What Does it Mean to be a Jewish Teen Today?

  • We’re much more than a religion, but that’s typically how we’re categorized by others. Is that a problem – does it matter? To some we’re “white” – to others, we are not at all.
  • How much of our identity as Jews is connected to Israel?  Is that a good thing?
  • How are we depicted – and sometimes misunderstood – in pop culture? Are there still Jewish (or, anti-Jewish) stereotypes on TV and in film, in music and in literature? Have things changed since your parents’ day – since your grandparents’ day?

Antisemitism: We Should Feel Safer Than Ever - But Do We?

  • Why the Jews? Long before the Church, Jews were already singled out as “other.”
  • What changed with Christianity? With Islam?
  • Is antisemitism the same as anti-Zionism?
  • Are college campuses as bad as some say they are?
  • Does it matter if antisemitism comes from “the right” or “the left?”
  • Just what is “intersectionality?” And while we’re at it, what’s “replacement theory?”

Zionism Has to Be More Than Love of The Land

  • Do we recognize that Israel is a tremendous success story? Is the way we speak and are taught about Israel focused too much on the negative – too much on wars and battles and enemies?
  • How connected are you?
Is Israel the “center of the Jewish world?”
  • Is that even important?

Judaism and Christianity

  • If we’re the “mother religion” – why are some of our offspring so negative about their mother?
  • The splitting off of Christianity from Judaism made antisemitism a religious matter. How have things changed – or have they?

Judaism and Islam

  • Judaism and Islam are more similar to each other than either is to Christianity. Did you know that?
  • Can Jews and Muslims create a relationship separate from what goes on in the Middle East?
  • Islam’s “Five Pillars” seems very familiar to Jews. They should.

A Few Differences – Lots of Similarities

  • Are we really “One People?” If so, why don’t we get along better?
  • Are those old labels (Conservative, Reform, Orthodox…) important today? Are they helpful?
  • What can we learn from each other?
  • In many American Jewish communities, “everyone” only comes together two times a year: to commemorate the Shoah (the “Holocaust”), and to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day (Yom HaAtzmaut) – and sometimes, not even on those two occasions. Can we change that?
