The Dean of Jewish Studies reports directly to the Head of School, and is a member of the Educational Leadership Team of The Oasis High School

Responsibilities include the following:

  • The overall development, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the Jewish Studies and Hebrew curricula and operations of The Oasis School.
  • The school’s adherence to its mission and vision of Jewish inclusion, ahavat Yisrael, Tzionut and the essential role of Hebrew in Jewish education and Jewish identity formation.
  • Maintaining the mutually reinforcing goals of content knowledge (e.g., Jewish literacy, historicity, etc.) and skills (e.g., Text analysis, language skills, etc.).
  • In consultation with the Head of School, designing and implementing Oasis religious policies, including but not limited to Shabbat, chaggim, t’filot and kashrut
  • In consultation and collaboration with appropriate Educational Leadership and Administrative Leadership Team members, designing and implementing school-wide observances and celebrations of chaggim, Shabbat and rosh chodesh.
  • In consultation with the Head of School and appropriate members of the Educational Leadership and Administrative Leadership teams, the design and implementation of programs and/or events that address non-scheduled Jewish and/or Israel-related events (e.g., piguim).
  • To ensure meaningful t’filot, which may include a direct leadership role and/or guidance that will enable students to fulfill leadership roles.
  • Work collaboratively with the Educational Leadership team.
  • Participate in the recruitment, hiring, training, assignment, supervision and evaluation of faculty in all Jewish Studies disciplines.
  • Ensure that the academic program meets the needs of a diverse community of learners.
  • Actively partner with the Director of Admissions in the recruitment and retention of students.
  • Actively partner with the Director of Marketing and Communications in marketing the school and its programs, to prospective students and to the community at large.
  • Actively partner with the Director of College Guidance to develop individualized preparation for college and university.
  • In consultation and collaboration with the Dean of General Studies and the Head of School, develop and oversee all aspects of student discipline.
  • In consultation and collaboration with the Dean of General Studies, ensure that Jewish Studies are mindfully interconnected with General Studies and with the overall core values, mission and vision of the school.
  • Foster an atmosphere of creativity, collaboration and innovations among students and faculty.
  • Actively partner with the Dean of General Studies in the development and implementation of a broad array of co-curricular programs.
  • In consultation and collaboration with the Dean of General Studies and the Head of school, create and monitor a program of professional development.
  • In consultation and collaboration with the Dean of General Studies and the Head of School, create and manage a program of Professional Development (PD)
  • Assume an active role in budgeting and financial planning.
  • Maintain on-going communications with faculty, students and parents.
  • Participate in the development of the academic calendar, in consultation with the Educational Leadership and Administrative Leadership teams.
  • Develop and teach an inaugural Grade 9 class Jewish Studies block, and subsequent grades in following years.
  • Serve as a one-on-one advisor.
  • Providing students with appropriate guidance and advice relevant to the student’s Jewish identity formation.
  • In collaboration with other Jewish Studies faculty, work to develop the broadest integration of General Studies, Jewish Studies and co-curricular programs.
  • Play an active role in the dissemination of Jewish and Israel-related knowledge to all staff and faculty; to assist in the development and execution of such information in an interactive forum that provides safe space for all participants.
  • To be a visible and positive presence in The Oasis School; to support and promote the overall mission and mandate of the school, within and outside the school.
